In light of the recession, and the new hip trend of eating local, Americans are turning to their roots! Gardens are beginning to appear everywhere, in empty lots, on rooftops (check out BK’s very own: Eagle Street RoofTop Farm), and in tiny Manhattanite window boxes.
Much to my delight, backyard chickens are also seeing an upsurge. They are legal to keep as pets, in NYC, and even cooler, the United States Post Office will deliver day old chicks right to your doorstep. (Hello yes!)
Dreaming of your own backyard but have none? Live through Nigella Carpenter, and her awesome book, Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer.
I’ve had my eye on this loveseat for a while now, and though I’ve no room for it, I keep imagining just where it would go. Especially after seeing it with what looks to be the Original Windsor Dining Table, there seems no better choice for a smaller eating area.
For whatever reason, the good ‘ol TML logo has disappeared. I’m working on getting it back, until then, sorry. This whole switchover hasn’t been without some pain.
This little gem definitely wins the prize for pretty/functional. It’s the IPK, or International Prototype Kilogram. It was created in 1879 as the official standard of mass. Kept in an airtight special case and housed in a temperature and humidity controlled vault in a secure room of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, in Sevres, France, it is the object that every nugget of gold, chunk of salt, or bushel of pasta is gauged against.
Not only that, it’s solid platinum-iridium, measures about an inch and a half in diameter, and would look great on a necklace. If you could get anywhere near it.
