MT ROYAL

"The effects of Mt. Royal depend upon the amount used, its potency, the circumstances and the expectations/mood of the listener. The most common (and desired) effects are talkativeness, cheerfulness, relaxation and greater appreciation of sound and colour. listeners frequently report perceiving an enhanced performance for tasks involving creativity (moving, dancing etc.), although no scientific evidence indicates that the music improves hearing, eyesight or skin sensitivity."

These guys played a great set for sled island. I'm looking forward to hearing more from them soon! Check them out:

GOOD TO BE HERE

The {Van Charles} Gallery

This Thursday at The Gallery winner of the PF Flyer Art and Sole fundraiser held last Winter is sharing goodness. His collection is at first inspired by the feelings one gets when time is taken to stop, breathe and look around at the beautiful wonders in life. I have been lucky enough to have had the chance to hang out with this artist over the past week with Aaron from The Gallery and I must say Van Charles is a honest, caring, open minded person. I am also impressed that he has taken the time to build his own canvases and be resourceful with some of his supports. Come down to The Gallery and experience Van Charles's out look on life: "It's always good to be here."

SYNESTHESIA

Synesthesia by Terri Timely from Pamala Buzick on Vimeo.

Ian Kibbey made the film with his partner Corey Creasey, who are the duo behind Terri Timely. Together, Ian and Corey have directed music videos for music artists like St. Vincent (who’s new video for Actor Out of Work is brilliant), The Little Ones, Joanna Newsom and Midlake among others. To say these guys are talented would be an understatement.

So the video above is titled Synesthesia, which for those who haven’t heard of it is, “is a neurologically based phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.” For example you might smell a color, or hear a taste… it’s sensing something and processing it in an entirely different matter. So in the video above, we see a family go about their rather suburban lives, but experiencing things in a different way. The boy at the table is listening to his vegetables, the mother is chopping up words, possibly tasting what she’s reading, and the other son in the living room is smelling color from his music.

The idea is quite brilliant and is visualized as well as I think one could with such a complex topic. Sit back and enjoy this little visual treat. Also, for more about synesthesia, click here to read the Wikipedia page.

BUSY BUSY BUSY

So everyone is running around doing crazy amounts of work for Factory Party #6 right now, but there are still lots of really great things happening this week that you should all check out.

There is a group exhibition of emerging Calgary artists at Skew Gallery on Thursday night. Merge 2 features the figure-based work of Tia Halliday, Kim Neudorf and Erik Olson, and is sure to be excellent. A very talented group of people! There is an opening reception from 6 until 8 pm.

Also on Thursday at Trepanier Baer Gallery, artist Chris Millar will be presenting 9 new paintings, a sculptural work, listening booth and copies of his book project. If you have not seen Millar's previous work, you cannot miss this opportunity. It's mind blowing.
Opening reception is from 6 pm onward.

Finally, 809 gallery is having it's very last show, EVER, on Friday. Hurrah is a two-man show of works by Bradley Harms and Brandon A. Dalmer. Come celebrate the success of one of Calgary's best Artist Run Centres (and no doubt one of Calgary's best garages). The opening is from 6 pm -9 pm, with a second chance to see the work on Sunday from 2 pm - 5 pm

Oh, and there is some big party thing on Wednesday at the Uptown or something. But that will probably suck. Nobody ever goes to those things anyways.

NO ONE LIKES LINEUPS

Summer is at a peek (solstice on Sunday kids!), and while chilling should be top priority for all, there is one Very important thing you need to do:
Get your tickets for the upcoming Factory Party #6 at The Uptown on June 24th (a week away!!). FP#6 is going to be
The party of the summer (yes, I'm including that horse show that people sometimes get excited about), especially because it's the opening act for the beloved Sled Island.

I'm not even going to go into all the AWESOME stuff that's going on... yet. I can, however tell you that if you don't get a ticket (there are 600 advance, that
will sell out), you will have to wait in line, and while the summer nights are welcoming, you'll be missing out on some crazy stuff inside.
They're $12 and ou can pick 'em up at:
The Uptown Box Office (afternoons - evening and weekends)
The Uptown Admin Office (buzz the barron building doors 10-4)
The REEL on Friday Nights at The Marquee Room
The Gallery (113-1013 17 Ave SW) (love this place).
and from any one of us here at TML.

Seriously, you want one of these tickets while they're around.

THE PHOTOGRAPHIC DICTIONARY

Whilst I was wasting time on the internet today, I happened to stumble across this diamond in the rough. It's called The Photographic Dictionary, and well, it is (as it's name suggests) a dictionary that employs the use of photographs to define words. They describe themselves thusly: "The Photographic Dictionary is dedicated to defining words through the literal, figurative, and personal meanings found in each photograph." The example above, as I'm sure you alredy guessed, is the photographic definition of "pool". Click here, and see if they've found a way to define your favorite word yet...

Talent and Worth

A recent collaborative photo shoot in Calgary caught my eye. Delicate fabrics and organic silhouettes float in a worn and very mysterious atmosphere. The white fairies gracefully subvert the decay around them. They are like exotic icing on a rich, dark, chocolate cake. Taunting, like a sensuous dream.

ROOFTOPS GALORE

It seems every weekend brings another rooftop worth exploring, and last week at the Bushwick Biennial was no exception. Great weather and fabulous art (not to mention fantastic company) made the day perfection. I'll drink to that. These clicks were taken by my great friend, photographer Eric Bessel.

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL

Hi everyone, I have been working on this show for a long time. It really means a lot to me, I have been thinking about it for ever. Doing a show like this is part of a dream I have had for an even longer time, in which case: I would love to see everyone I love there to celebrate it's opening with me, and bring your friends, I'd love to meet more great people. I am really excited! If by chance you can't come to the show, don't worry, my work will be up all summer, but keep your eyes peeled, I get to change it up whenever I like. The opening reception is next Wednesday at Blink Restaurant & Bar, located at 111 8 Avenue SW,a place I love very much. Come for dinner, stay for the people. Call (403) 263-5330 to make reservations!

Thank you,

34 MINUTES OF SUMMER. A NEW MIXTAPE BY KID CHAMPAGNE

My summer is in full swing, my bicycle is logging some serious mileage as is my liver, and that's just the way I like it. Interestingly enough, I've been listening to a lot of rock and roll lately, and these few songs are quickly becoming my summer anthems! Anyway, hit it up and let the sounds of a million patios and so many cold cans of beer flow through your ears!

DREAM BABY DREAM

THE RATS

Over 40 years ago Fred Cole, a California native set out on a trip "up north" to evade the American military's War draft for Vietnam. When Cole and his accompaniment where hit with a van breakdown in Portland little did he know it, but it was that event which sealed his destiny. It was in Portland, Oregon where Fred met his wife and musical partner, Toody. From the early seventies until now, the couple have played together in several monumental outfits in a plethora of genre's. In the beginning the was The Weeds, followed by the Lollipop Shoppe. That soon became Zipper until 1979 when The Ramones where scheduled to come through town. Already a veteran in other high energy movements in the past like the impassioned rawness of psychedelia of the late 60's, Cole saw the opportunity to dive head first into the punk scene. The Rats where formed and debuted as the Ramones' supporting act... and the rest is history. The Rats went on to make 3 full length LP's, and when punk ran out of steam in the mid 80's, the couple soon formed arguablly their most celebrated band, Dead Moon. As these two so aptly show, nothing last's forever and Dead Moon is now Pierced Arrows. Their contribution to the Portland scene is monumental- having owned a musical instrument shop in the 70's and 80's where they boasted to have supplied anyone his is anyone with their first gear. Not to mention opening the famous Portland venue The Crystal Ballroom. Cleary, any two people working together for so long investing so much love in their craft is bound to flourish. If you like this Rats LP you should definetly check into all their stuff. It's like if Talking Heads where a punk band. Can you beat that? Hell no!

DAMN THAT'S CHEESY

Two of the Netherlands’ top export products include Design and, of course, cheese. Not too long ago, marketing consultant Marinde van Leeuwen wondered why the two shouldn’t join forces, and so she came up with the brilliant concept of DesignKAAS.

For the cheese jacket designs, Van Leeuwen has turned to all things typically and traditionally Dutch – tulips, windmills, lace, the boerenbont pattern, and poetry. But it’s not all about good looks - DesignKAAS cheeses were recently named amongst the top 25 cheeses in the Netherlands!

Visit the DesignKAAS website to find out more, and buy yourself some of the best looking cheese I've ever seen.

SEAN AA MACALISTER

We here at TML all love David Shrigley a lot, but to have someone who loves him so much that he makes art just like him in a way that we can touch and breath (here in Calgary for a limited time) is pretty sweet too.
Our dear friend from The Straw, Sean, is putting out a book of 100 drawings that he's done called
100 Pieces of Mind which he'll be selling at Tubby Dog tomorrow night along with a full of hot dogs reception. The drawings are great, witty and whole-hearted so pick up a copy!

BRATSA

Yo,
Tomorrow you should go and check out these wicked paintings that this 72 year old man does of programming for computer viruses. I wish Bratsa was my grand-dad! Opening reception from 2-5pm at Herringer Kiss Gallery (709 11 Ave SW).

ps: also an opening accross the street at Paul Kuhn (same time), but I barely wish those artists were my relatives... I'm not sure what that says about them though.

AITOR THROUP

I found a picture of Aitor Throup in a file labelled "menswear" on my computer. Not remembering who he was but assuming I'd saved his picture for a reason, I looked him up. As it turns out, Throup's menswear is the sort that really blurs the line between art and design, which - particularly in menswear - is something we don't see enough of. I'm not sure how I feel about the clothes themselves but, personal taste aside, they are very interesting and technically impressive. If you want to check out his designs and his sketches (which I really like) you can find them here.

PHOTOGRAPHER: JEAN-BAPTISTE MONDINO

For the last twenty years, Jean-Baptiste Mondino’s wildly progressive photographs and videos have radically changed the strategies of the rock, pop and fashion industry, making him one of the most influential, admired and sought-after photographers of our time. Yet before he found himself behind the lens, Mondino’s first passion was music, which he indulged while working as a DJ and composer. Despite his eventual change in path, music continues to be his favorite source for inspiration.

Jean-Baptiste Mondino was born in Aubervilliers, France in 1949, and currently resides in Paris. Today, his services are commissioned by the likes of Björk, Brian Ferry, Sting, David Bowie, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Tom Waits and Prince—as they are likewise by design gurus such as Philippe Starck or politicians such as Nelson Mandela, not to mention any number of art directors in the large ad agencies, editors-in-chief of numerous underground or glossy magazines and manufacturers of diverse brand-name articles such as Dior, Gautier, Nike and Calvin Klein. In addition to his photography, Mondino continues to be active with his film work for commercials and music videos.

ON A MORE PERSONAL NOTE...

Since this really isn't the place to post every single thing I make, but you obviously all want to see it, I recently started up a fashion/sewing blog, "Sew Bitchin'!". It's got a lot more sass than my posts here and I've completely done away with grammar, but with the same impeccable taste and I usually post several times a day. So if you're interested in what I'm sewing, fashion-related things, and the occasional picture of my nails (it may not have much to do with sewing, but who doesn't love a gaudy set of acrylics?), then you should check it out.

FOR THE LOVE OF VINYL RECORDS

I spent my hungover weekend listening to
Scandal and King Tuff at my bud's place. After drinkin' away the pain in McCaren park with To-Go-Margaritas from the Turkey's Nest, we hit up a rooftop party, and a show at the Autumn Bowl. Hurrah Summer.

KITSUNE MAISON COMPILATION VOL. 7

So, Kitsune Maison has done it again by releasing their best compilation record to date: Kitsune Maison Compilation Vol. 7. They're calling it the lucky one and it's blowing my mind right now. The clever cats over at Kitsune are proving themselves as the foremost taste-makers internationally right now, considering this compilation is not simply comprised of the newest artists on the label; instead they just chose their favorite songs that they have been listening to in the office, slapped them together and pressed a vinyl that is true musical pornography!

SINCE I KNOW YOU ALL LOVE WARHOL'S CAMPBELL'S SOUP CANS...

If you're ever reading about art brut, one of the first names to come up will be Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930). To tell you enough, I'd have to write way too much, so I'll direct you to his biography (a very interesting timeline), but to sum things up, after being diagnosed as schizophrenic and institutionalized Wölfli began doing tremendously complex and deatiled drawings, writing and composing music. Several years after his death, Jean Dubeffet discovered Wölfli's work and gave him his reputation as one of - if not the - most significant artist of the art brut "movement". A movement not often given proper credit in the history of art, Wölfli's influence is often overlooked, but his art should not be.

Marcel Dzama

If you like art that's a little bit scary, like I do, and you don't know about Canadian-born Marcel Dzama and his work, you should spend time with some of his drawings, like the above Untitled(2001). Done mostly in ink, watercolour and sometimes rootbeer, these works are beautiful and terrifying, simple but rich with narrative. Take a look at some of his other drawings, paintings and sculpture at the David Zwirner Gallery website: http://www.davidzwirner.com/artists/10/

Or, if you're feeling brave, watch this music video for N.A.S.A's The People Tree, with artwork by Marcel Dzama.

This will give you nightmares. Don't say I didn't warn you.

GRIZZLY MUTHA FUCKIN' BEAR

I just copped the new GB record, Veckamist, and it's blowing my fucking mind right now. It’s hard to imagine any band that's able to utilize the studio as effectively as Grizzly Bear. The Brooklyn-based quartet seamlessly weaves instruments into textures, rendering music that is almost irrelevant to discuss in traditional terms of rhythm and arrangement. But Grizzly Bear’s art is not something to be thought about, it's something to be felt; it sweeps through you, feathering imagination and unlocking emotion. While this is prodigiously modern music, the cleverness of its coordination and restraint of delivery makes it seem of a porous and playful past, leaving the listener lying on a hardwood floor in the 60s, reading Kerouac and smoking Lucky Strikes. A spectacular triumph, Veckamist is as absolutely enchanting as it is thoroughly impressive.

I decided to throw in a little treat for you all, Grizzly Bear's Knife remixed by Girltalk

THE CLOCK CLOCK BY HUMANS SINCE 1982

Swedish designers Humans since 1982 have created a digital clock made of 24 analogue clocks, which spell out the time with their hands.

The designers have also developed a typeface derived from letter forms created by banks of clocks.

The prototype Clock Clock will be exhibited at the Rhösska design museum in Göteborg from June till mid August 2009.

DELICIOUS HALF OFF-TERNOON

Something good always comes out of something bad - the recession has brought us, although not terribly proportional, half priced appy's and drinks on weekday afternoons at Teatro - one of Calgary's premier gastro institutions. Anything from their bar and wine list (which reads like a really good novel) as well as items including beef tartar and Ahi tuna carpaccio from an afternoon snack menu, are half off on weekday afternoons from 3-5 pm. All part of their 4-point Economic Stimulus Package including: 3 course lunch for two for the price of a barrel of oil at closing the day before and free corkage and 3 course chef's tasting for $50/pp on Sunday Evenings.
Go and revel in their great collection of art as well as your food and drink. Above is one of my favorite pieces, Hand Bird by David Altmejd - one of the only bronze pieces the wonder man has made - also seen at the 52nd Venice Biennale!
Seriously worth the trip.

ERNESTO NETO I LOVE YOU
