KITSUNE MAISON COMPILATION VOL. 7

So, Kitsune Maison has done it again by releasing their best compilation record to date: Kitsune Maison Compilation Vol. 7. They're calling it the lucky one and it's blowing my mind right now. The clever cats over at Kitsune are proving themselves as the foremost taste-makers internationally right now, considering this compilation is not simply comprised of the newest artists on the label; instead they just chose their favorite songs that they have been listening to in the office, slapped them together and pressed a vinyl that is true musical pornography!

Click here to listen to a mini-mix of the compilation (right click to download)

SINCE I KNOW YOU ALL LOVE WARHOL'S CAMPBELL'S SOUP CANS...

If you're ever reading about art brut, one of the first names to come up will be Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930). To tell you enough, I'd have to write way too much, so I'll direct you to his biography (a very interesting timeline), but to sum things up, after being diagnosed as schizophrenic and institutionalized Wölfli began doing tremendously complex and deatiled drawings, writing and composing music. Several years after his death, Jean Dubeffet discovered Wölfli's work and gave him his reputation as one of - if not the - most significant artist of the art brut "movement". A movement not often given proper credit in the history of art, Wölfli's influence is often overlooked, but his art should not be.

WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?

Lori Nix.

She shoots scenes using scale models (like these), which loosely translates to: These photos can out-cool the real world in any way, shape or form.

Whether or not they do is subjective. Check her out, the link goes to our favourites with other series' to the left.

Marcel Dzama

If you like art that's a little bit scary, like I do, and you don't know about Canadian-born Marcel Dzama and his work, you should spend time with some of his drawings, like the above Untitled(2001). Done mostly in ink, watercolour and sometimes rootbeer, these works are beautiful and terrifying, simple but rich with narrative. Take a look at some of his other drawings, paintings and sculpture at the David Zwirner Gallery website: http://www.davidzwirner.com/artists/10/

Or, if you're feeling brave, watch this music video for N.A.S.A's The People Tree, with artwork by Marcel Dzama.

This will give you nightmares. Don't say I didn't warn you.

GRIZZLY MUTHA FUCKIN' BEAR

I just copped the new GB record, Veckamist, and it's blowing my fucking mind right now. It’s hard to imagine any band that's able to utilize the studio as effectively as Grizzly Bear. The Brooklyn-based quartet seamlessly weaves instruments into textures, rendering music that is almost irrelevant to discuss in traditional terms of rhythm and arrangement. But Grizzly Bear’s art is not something to be thought about, it's something to be felt; it sweeps through you, feathering imagination and unlocking emotion. While this is prodigiously modern music, the cleverness of its coordination and restraint of delivery makes it seem of a porous and playful past, leaving the listener lying on a hardwood floor in the 60s, reading Kerouac and smoking Lucky Strikes. A spectacular triumph, Veckamist is as absolutely enchanting as it is thoroughly impressive.

I decided to throw in a little treat for you all, Grizzly Bear's Knife remixed by Girltalk

THE CLOCK CLOCK BY HUMANS SINCE 1982

Swedish designers Humans since 1982 have created a digital clock made of 24 analogue clocks, which spell out the time with their hands.

The designers have also developed a typeface derived from letter forms created by banks of clocks.

The prototype Clock Clock will be exhibited at the Rhösska design museum in Göteborg from June till mid August 2009.

OMFG this thing rules. Check out the Clock Clock in action here, and while you're at it, why not download the typeface.

DELICIOUS HALF OFF-TERNOON

Something good always comes out of something bad - the recession has brought us, although not terribly proportional, half priced appy's and drinks on weekday afternoons at Teatro - one of Calgary's premier gastro institutions. Anything from their bar and wine list (which reads like a really good novel) as well as items including beef tartar and Ahi tuna carpaccio from an afternoon snack menu, are half off on weekday afternoons from 3-5 pm. All part of their 4-point Economic Stimulus Package including: 3 course lunch for two for the price of a barrel of oil at closing the day before and free corkage and 3 course chef's tasting for $50/pp on Sunday Evenings.
Go and revel in their great collection of art as well as your food and drink. Above is one of my favorite pieces, Hand Bird by David Altmejd - one of the only bronze pieces the wonder man has made - also seen at the 52nd Venice Biennale!
Seriously worth the trip.

ERNESTO NETO I LOVE YOU

Ernesto Neto, mad hot brasil artist, does it again. This time in the HUGE SCALE at the Armory on Park Ave. Wander around his creation, which looks like some sort of land from outta space. So dreamy.

WWDJD?

This past Sunday I saw Dead Jesus.

There was no water to wine miracles.

But the bar stool with a bible page wrapped in a pig intestine read: The small and the big shall be removed. And the servant will no longer serve his master.

EXISTENTIALISM IS DEAD - WE'RE BACK TO NIHILISM

Bebe Buell & Stiv Bators 1978

LET'S BAKE!

One of my - and I think most people's - favorite things about summertime is having time to do things you don't usually have time to do, like bake! It's fun to bake with your friends or bring them your baking to eat together, so start looking for a good recipe. Personally, I'm going to be making these s'more brownies, click here if you want to make them too!

CONCEPTUAL ART

The image may challenge what one thinks art should look like. This "event" is merely more than the exaggerated object itself, an enlarged well crafted penis. The artist and two close friends are blind folded with a pirate flag, constraining their sight of the object and guests around them. Spectators look on knowing what will inevitably happen. Personal and sexual sensations are aroused by both female and male spectators as they volunteer to witness the battle and destruction of the candy and condom filled pinyata. A perfect rebellious creation for turning thirty, happy birthday!!

WARHOL... AGAIN!

THE (TKB) GALLERY

A solo exhibiton featuring new works from David Brunning aka. TheKidBelo.

This guy is rad and I have seen him working, and he is killing it. This is going to be another fantastic show at The Gallery. I have been waiting months now for this show. David is one of Calgary's most prolific graffiti artists, and he will be showing all new works including some abstract work he has been experimenting with.

Maybe we can't all afford some of his pieces right now, or possibly that's just me because there are a lot of pieces that I want and I know I should be spending my money on paint. Anyways there will be more sick stuff. Limited edition reporter bags, shirts and a raffle on the public opening night to win a 36" x 60" custom piece by TheKidBelo. I am buying tickets to win. I can not wait for the music, this is going to be crowded (18+).

If you miss the public opening on thursday, do not worry. The show will be up until beginning of July. So you can check out David's work at The Gallery, Calgary's best lifestyles shop and gallery. With streetwear brands from Vancouver, San Francisco, L.A., New York, Japan, Europe and local designers.

Public opening is this Thursday, May 21 2009
7 PM - 12 AM
at The Gallery Street Life & Styles
113 - 1013 17th Ave SW

BROTHERS

"I don't trust anyone that doesn't like Tom Petty."
~Andrew J. Bolz

RT YOA

I'm going to be a bad kitty and post about stuff I know nothing about, but I have faith in these institutions and I'm going to do it anyways:
The Grad Show at ACAD - Up until the 23rd, apparently we pulled it together and it's a pretty good show. I'm excited to finally get to go and see it tomorrow. Make sure you make it up there, 'cause if you don't, you know you'll regret it. Open tonight until 6 - check hours through the link.
The New Gallery - Terrance Houle Curated some stuff about nomadic lifestyle by new media First Nations artists. I think it'll be pretty good. He just graduated from ACAD in fact, and will add you on facebook if you ask him to! The reception is tonight from 7 pm at eau claire.
Truck Gallery - At Variance - You come for the falafels and stay for the art. We all love this place best of all so you'd better make it down. Reception from 8 pm in the lower level of the Grain Exchange bld. (815 1 St SE).
Stride - Grand Theft Bicycle. This shit is sweet, these crazy-hacker-artist-gamer guys mod'ed Grand Theft Auto so a bike is the controller and you bike around and kill political figures... something like that... The reception is from 8 pm tonight at 1004 Macleod Tr north SE.

OKAY, SWEET - Here's the hard part - DON"T go to the Marquee room afterwards, we won't be there, and some other stuff is going on. DO COME TOMORROW and I promise to sell you some Lucky!

PAM HOGG

So, back in February, 80's fashion legend Pam Hogg made her runway comeback with an INSANE collection. Now, as of yesterday she has opened a pop-up shop in London that will be open for just one month. The shop features Hogg's signature catsuits, memorabillia, and some vintage pieces as well as exclusive one-offs sewn by Hogg herself. So if you're lucky enough to be in London, you should check it out!

HOW DO YOU KNOW I'M MAD?

I needed a little inspiration for a fashion shoot I will be styling this weekend.

The New York Times website is pretty awesome, and I came across this the other day and was blown away. Audio interviews paired with some amazing black & white photography by Todd Heisler. EVEN SCULPTURES WEAR SKINNY JEANS THESE DAYS...

Damien Hirst action figure 2008

Made specifically for a sculpture project by Michael Leavitt known as the ARTARMY, this Damian Hirst comes completely severed in twain with it's own glass and metal case... And don't forget the 3 foot tall Andy Warhol piece... Interestingly enough, I really want one of these. Maybe someday, when I have the budget to collect art...

LIVE.FAST.DRESS.PRETTY

"You are sitting so close to her tonight, outside, waiting for your friends to pay for their drinks and come out. You're both laughing like nostalgic old ladies about stuff that happened only hours ago, but these are the days of your life (Queen), right? You're drunk. She's drunk. Oh, and she's so so so so pretty, but you would never tell her that because "she's a model and she hears it all the time".

I haven't kissed a boy in so long, she says. Why can't I make out with someone tonight?

Abruptly and awkwardly you kiss her right into her smile and maybe, sort of, that smile turns into a kiss for a bit then she pulls away, but not that far. You can't even tell if you're about to get the friends vibe or not. She laughs gracefully and says your name in between the ha has. You were the Fonze but now you're Richie Cunningham so fast. Like the birds in Hitchcock, your friends descend upon you laughing and play-fighting and asking the eternal party refrain: "Where are we going now?" But you can't hear a thing at all, like in the Daft Punk video with the Dog Boy when the sound gets muffled in the fridge." -MERLIN BRONQUES

Check out lastnightsparty.com, and it's sister site - two of my favorites - for photos and musings from one of the international party-scene's raunchiest photographers. Scenesters truely are the same everywhere...

THE DUDES - BLOOD GUTS BRUISES CUTS

As some of you know I'm currently in a love affair with Calgary...what can I say, its been treating me well lately. My most recent gem of good fortune was working with The Dudes on their latest set of press photos that will be used to internationally promote their new album, which drops on June 2nd. They rock and I've been a fan for years, so this was pretty fun. Here are a couple samples from the shoot.

ANDRE vs. CAZALS

So, not only is this one of the best videos I've seen in such a long time, but the little dancing man featured dancing beside the girl was drawn by the Parisian king of cool, Andre.

IGNORANCE IS BLISS...

Whenever I'm stopped by the authorities on my bicycle - in addition to eyelash batting and strateigically placed appologies - I declare ignorance to the laws of the two wheeled roadsters. I'm aware of the existance of the bylaws declaring lights, reflectors, bells, mirror, reflector vest, helmet, helmet mirror, cheesy clicky shoes, license, sobriety, stopping at lights and signs, right of way and other 'neccesities' for riding your bicycle, but firmly believe that if I havn't come across the information in a public platform then I can't be held accountable (seriously, I'm googling biking rules/bylaws and not finding anything right now!)...
One part of their crap that I do believe in is the bike light, mostly because it's so affordable, functional when tresspassing parks in the middle of the night, and fun to shine in people's eyes - not to mention lowering the likely-hood of you being run over by a Drunk on a Friday night.

My favorite is the turtle light for $3.5 at MEC. You can get one in red for the back and in white in a bunch of colour casings to match your frame for the front. Super discreet but also a point on your side of argument with the Po, just make sure you watch your batteries and replace when needed.

Happy Riding!

SINCE WE ARE ON THE TOPIC

I think the Evan Penny show affected everyone, including myself, so I would share this video that talks a bit about his process. Its pretty epic, and so is his work.

ULTRA REALISTIC

Evan Penny
No One - In Particular: RGB#2

Currently at the TrépanierBaer Gallery, #105 999 - 8 Street S.W., is a show featuring recent works of Evan Penny and Stephan Balkenhol. The two sculptors take opposing methods in reaching accurate portrayal of human characters and form. This exhibition runs from May 8 through to June 13, 2009 and should not be missed.

THE REEL: EVERY FRIDAY AT THE MARQUEE ROOM

ART, WINE AND COOKIE CITY

Tomorrow there's going to be this crazy posh-fest of design, art, food, wine and all things good (like Danish food) brought to you by the neatly named people at SODO 11Ave, better known as the arts district. NewZones and Herringer Kiss are going to be living up the Saturday Afternoon with openings, The Bike Shop is having a BBQ in addition to the wine tastings at Metro Vino and Ferocious Grape, and tasty snacking at Brulee (yum!), and you can also spend the afternoon browsing through Domicile (now with Muse florals) and Kit, and maybe finish the day off at the Broken City roof-top patio for a pint.
The SODO 11Ave Block Party Runs from 11-5 pm Tomorrow, from 8-9 St and 10 Ave and up 11 Ave to 5 St SW.
See you There!

LUCKY PENNY

It's a little late notice but I've been so excited about this show for so long that it almost comes as an afterthought: Evan Penny and Stephen Balkenhol will be showing work at Trepanier Baer (8 St and 10 Ave SW) until the middle of June.
Be sure to roll in there before 8 pm tonight for the opening but make sure to go back again to take in the detail and eerie-ness of Penny's work as well as the beautiful juxtaposition of his ultra-reality and the beatiful representation of Balkenhol's work.

TML PODCAST: GARAGE DAZE

Lately I have been interested in looking backwards to the songs of the past to scratch my musical itch. More specifically, I have been looking back to a time where catchy surf melodies started to emerge out of the mid west. Mimicking the sound of the British invasion around the early to mid sixties, but with a Californian touch. To a time with psychedelic guitar journeys spacing out over three chord rythms, and reverb soaked vocals washed out by analog delay. Or sometimes, just staight forward Garage Rock. Well this new podcast is a nod to some of the bands who laid down the foundation for Garage and Psychedelic Rock. Also included are some of the bands from the past and present who reflect some of the sounds from the bands in that golden era. Enjoy!

Jon went out and got a tattoo with "mom" in it. It looks cool, and I brought my camera along to get some evidence. Check it out!

Went to Death by Audio last night (one of BK's DIY spaces) and saw the rockin' Yves Klein Blue... not only is their music catchy and fun, but these kids put on a fantastic live show! By the end I was basically in love with all of them! They have a new album coming out..... keep an eye on this one folks, they're going to be huge! (photos copyright Yves Klein Blue)

2 DIFFERENT TRAILERS FOR 2 DIFFERENT MOVIES

The Girlfriend Experience is five days in the life of an ultra high-end Manhattan call girl who thinks she has her life totally under control. She feels her future is secure because she runs her own business her own way, makes $2000 an hour, and has a devoted boyfriend who accepts her lifestyle. But when you're in the business of meeting people, you never know who you're going to meet. Staring the infamous Sasha Grey, the directors of the film suggest watching it with someone you f***.

Where The Wild Things Are is an adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic children's story (directed by Spike Jonze) where Max, a disobedient little boy sent to bed without his supper, creates his own world--a forest inhabited by ferocious wild creatures that crown Max as their ruler. Oh my god am I excited for this!

SOME PEOPLE STEAL BIKES

Getting around the downtown cannot get much better than on a bicycle going fast. Night meetings with friends, visiting different hidden spots is my favorite. To not have a bike slows summer life down. Last year I remember how Andrea helped talk me out of a ticket from a cop van late at night. I suppose I sped through a red light. Anyways my precious vintage friend was stolen one night parked at work. My life changed. Soon after Randy's bike was also taken from him. Fall came, than Winter, and now it is Spring. I hope all my friends pick up bicycles pretty soon because I picked up a new one last week at The Good Life Community Bike Shop in Eau Claire Market, and I can not wait for a new summer with my new bicycle friend.
P.s. photograph, get a good u-lock and record the serial number of your bike, because some people are not very nice.

FOURTH STREET...

...is no longer only for the hungry tummy, now it's a place for eager legs, arms and necks too. Three new additions to the fashion scene in Calgary are making 4th St. SW a place for girls and boys (Henry has company!).
Check out Coco and Violet for some beautiful finds including Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent and Mason tops and dress’ as well as some great jeans including Joe’s, and Paige Denim; for your feets, Coco and Violet have Toms (not to mention a pretty sweet-ass purple glittery floor).

Right next door at Geneology they’re more focused on laid-back casual and denim. James Jeans, William Rast, Fidelity, Good Society (organic raw denim) are sure to give at least a few choices for your bottom (for the boys too). The also carry fluxus, who make some great cotton tops out of LA and a large selection of Montreal’s own Matt & Nat vegan bags.

(both are located at 2500 4 St SW. across from the Safeway).

A lot closer up to 17th Ave, (at 4th still) is Mealon, a new shop with nautical décor and local and national designers. Stop in to check it out!

BOMBSHELL

This last month I have been taken advantage of by cable television. But, how can I be mad when it shares this movie gem by the name of 'Bombshell'. Staring Jean Harlow and released in
1933! Watch and see who wrote the book 70 plus years ago on being and staying famous, that our sacred socialites and mount Hollywood are still practicing out word for precious word.
