When the last Factory Party was announced early February, excitement spread like wildfire. Not because we’ll be happy to see the art-music extravaganza go – far from it; we knew it wouldn’t last forever – but because of the news that the magical Warpaint was confirmed to head the night, which caused mini implosions across the city.
Over the next couple of days, much would happen for the experimental art rock group. The L.A. natives would sign on with heavy hitters Rough Trade Records and tour dates would double, with pit stops at the rites of passage SXSW, as well as new tour dates in France.
Invested in “the simplicity and subtle nature of all sizes, shapes, colours, movement and sound,” says Jess Lee, vocalist and bassist of the experimental group, it was clear. The calling was made and the answer was given: Factory Party 8 – this was meant to be.

BeatRoute: What has the tour been like so far? Any epic vibrations you want to share with us?
Warpaint: The tour has been easy, breezy and beautiful! We are having a ball with the Akron Family and everyone is high in heaven off music and life. We are inspired as hell!

BR: Tell us a little bit about the Warpaint creative process?
W: Our creative process is quite the feminine one, as well as a collaborative one. We laugh and cry and dance around. If we’re not moved on some sort of emotional level, we stop what we are doing and start something else. Much like many musicians, we’re sure. The most important thing is that we are all having a good time and we don't take ourselves too seriously.

BR: What was it like to work with John Frusciante on Exquisite Corpse?
W: John is like a wonderful child! So innocent and pure…he was amazing to work with. We all respect him immensely, and we are really excited for him to mix and treat our record, seeing as he was there from the start, listening and supporting us as a band that he enjoyed!

BR: Congratulations on signing with Rough Trade Records! What does this mean for you ladies now as a band?
W: Basically this means we have to work ten times harder and everyday! In hopes that it will pay off… or at least we will be heard by the masses. That's the dream and the goal!

BR: Calgary is pretty stoked to hear you guys. What should we be expecting?
W: A whole lotta love! Y'all better dance!

BR: What’s coming up for Warpaint?
W: Lots of touring! Yay! We get to see the world and share our music with whoever will listen.

BR: Favourite performances so far?
W: We had an absolute amazing time in Athens. We played our best and pretty much favourite show ever! Then we played in New Orleans and that shit was off the hook! The south has a very receptive audience. They exude all things lovely, and are incredibly warm spirits. Overall…an amazing crowd to play for!

BR: What books are you reading at the moment?
W: Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus (Jenny Lee), The Consolations of Philosophy (Theresa), The Book of Laughter and Forgetting (Emily), and Pete Weiss’s book of short stories (Stella).

BR: So what’s coming on the new LP?
W: A big surprise! And lots of love.

Scotch has recently become one of my favorite drinks and single malt scotches are among the most complex and desirable whisk(e)ys you can purchase. The bottle pictured above is made by one of the most renowned single malt producers in the world, Bruichladdich (pronounced brewik-laddie) and is one of the most affordable of it’s kind, especially due to its excellent quality. The liquor is aged in Cava casks, which gives it a stunning brightness on the palate, and because it’s made on the small Scottish island of Islay (which is world renowned for it’s peat, that the islanders still use as fuel for their liquor stills) it has strong smokey and salty notes as well. Best served in a rocks glass with just a splash of water to cut (or open) the booze this $59 bottle will titilate the senses and stimulate great conversation.

If you’re still trying to wrap your mouth around the complexities of scotch, why not take a break and crack a bottle of Kentucky Sour Mash Bourbon instead. Maker’s Mark is aged for around 6 to 7 1/2 years, being bottled and marketed when expert tasters agree that it is ready. Maker’s Mark is one of the few distillers to rotate the barrels from the upper to the lower levels of the aging warehouses during the aging process to benefit from the differences in temperature during the process.

Maker’s Mark is sold in squarish bottles, which are sealed with red wax. T. William Samuels’ wife, Marjorie “Margie” Samuels, gave the whiskey its name, drew its label, and thought up the wax dipping that gives the bottle its distinctive look. With a subtle, complex, clean nose, rife with vanilla and spice, and a delicate floral note of roses, plus lime and cocoa beans. Medium in body, Maker’s Mark offers a palate of fresh fruit, spices, eucalyptus and ginger cake. The finish features more spices, fresh oak with a hint of smoke, and a final flash of peach this Bourbon is great on it’s own with a few chunks of ice or mixed into a traditional cocktail and is an essential bottle for any bar!

One of the most essential bottles for any bar is Rye whiskey, and perhaps I’m biased but no one, and I mean no one makes a better Rye than us Canadians. I know you may be looking at the photo above thinking: “my grandpa drinks that!” All I have to say in response is that my grandfather drinks it too, and he drinks it because it’s a bloody amazing spirit! Canadian Club (more commonly referred to as C.C. around these parts) is the only North American spirit to have been granted a Royal Warrant; yup, you guessed it, the British Royal Family drank this stuff! In fact, most cocktails during their golden age called for Canadian Rye Whiskey. According to many, this is the grand daddy of spirits (no pun intended). It’s got beautiful notes of spice, apple and vanilla and it makes one hell of a cocktail. That being said, don’t be afraid to drink it straight with a few hunks of ice or even like my grandpa: with a good amount of Canada Dry Ginger Ale. Cheers!

BUILD A BAR!

Seeing this photo on JJJJound today made me realize that I should start building a bar. That being said, the next few posts will be all about booze; specifically, the types of booze that should be on everyone’s bar (at least in my opinion) and why. I’m also going to go over some classic cocktail recipies that every gentleman (and lady) worth their salt should know.

So here’s the list, this is what you should have on your most basic bar, regardless of the brand:
Vodka
Gin
Rum (both dark and white)
Cognac (it’s expensive, but it’s worth it)
Bitters
Whisk(e)y (Scotch, Bourbon and Rye… yes, all three)
Mix (Water, Tonic, and Soda; anything else is a waste of time, you shouldn’t hide the taste of your booze and if you have to, stop drinking)
Ice (made with PURIFIED water)

Oh man, I’m gonna go pour myself a Scotch, it’s happy hour around these parts! Cheers!

I overheard someone talking while I sat in Broken City the other day. She was telling her friends how terrible Factory Parties were, and it was funny, because it didn't make me angry, or really make me laugh. It just made me smile to see that people were still talking about it, even if they hate it.

I have been hearing this sentiment from tons of people ever since the first party was held at Artlife almost 2 years ago. And again, there's no hard feelings. Factory Parties have their problems, just like everything. I know a lot of people that walked away with a bad taste in their mouths. This distaste is actually a good thing - people who have complaints should be motivated to start their own thing in the artistic community, wether that thing follows the more traditional ideas of an art show or if if becomes a crazy, anarchist cluster fuck, at least people are doing something.

I have been involved with Factory Party since 2. I have had majors ups and downs with it as well. Strained relationships, broken art, panic attacks, hours and hours spent taping up photos, 4 hours naps in the Uptown, driving around in Anthony's van in a panic trying to pick up people, art and figuring out what to do about Artlife's broken plumbing.

I can say without doubt that it was all worth it. Factory started because a group of friends wanted someplace to show their art. That was it. There was no money involved, no advertising, no wheeling and dealing. Just art and friends. As time went on, more outside factors became involved. Music played more and more of an integral role. Sponsorship had their fingers in things. We moved venues. Sled Island happened. Fashion week happened. Art became less of the focus. It became a party. We lost money instead of making it, but that was OK, because it was fun.

Factory grew up with the kids that started it. It could be a bit of a terrifying monster at times, but we have to start somewhere. Factory party got my art out there. It taught me patience. I met amazing people. I cried, I laughed. I met my best friends because of it. I even got a "real" art job out of the deal.

So, to the woman at Broken City, Factory Party was way more than "a reason for some hipster kids to hang their shitty art on the walls" - it was a reason to do something for this city.

So...there it is. Go out and start something.

I just picked up this little gem by angsty Vancouver girl-punkers: Vapid. The record is called Practically Dead and I picked it up on a whim about an hour ago. Frankly speaking I don’t think this record will get too many spins on the turntable, but the cover art is rad enough to have made me want it.

Looks like today is Canadian vinyl day… Change gears and head in a completely different direction (literally) and you’ll arrive at Montreal’s CFCF. The young producer’s latest double LP effort, Continent, is like a lush film score, and as I sit here listening to it for the first time, I can definitely tell this one will be on high rotation for a while.

Here in NYC we have this amazing store called, Pearl River Mart, home to all things asian and cheap. You can get everything from bedroom slippers, to ramen, to housewares. I've just spent the past forty five minutes trying to make these beautiful shades hang on my awkward light fixtures to no dice. But the thought was there anyways....and they only cost me $4 dollars so I don't feel too terrible. Going to shower with some sandalwood soap now.
